Judoka Nacanieli Inducted Into 2018 Hall of Fame

Team Fiji renowned Judoka Nacanieli Takayawa was inducted into the Fiji Hall of Fame this year, joining his late father Viliame Takayawa who was inducted in 2006.

Nacanieli has had a successful career in the sport of Judo after makig his debut in Judo at six years old competing at the 1981 New Zealand Championship and winning a Gold Medal in his age group as well as weight category.

He went on to create history for Team Fiji by winning Gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games that which was held in Manchester.

Mr Takayawa competed in various tournaments around the world during his 13 year career such as the then South Pacific Games, Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Championships, Olympic Games, Oceania Judo Championships, US International, International Championships and World Judo Championships.

“My achievements from the past two decades wouldn’t be possible without the help and the guidance of the Almighty and the people of Fiji not forgetting my family,” Takayawa said.

Meanwhile the 2018 Fiji Olympic Order Recipients were Professor Eddie McCaig who was a long serving medical volunteer and has been the team doctor for boxing, rugby union and rugby league to regional and international events.

Joining Mr McCaig was Susan Yee a national representative of Hockey, Football and Squash , being the Fiji Women’s Squash Championship in 1983.Her recognition however was for her continuing contributions to sport as an administrator, having served as President of Squash Fiji, Secretary/Treasurer and President of Women’s Golf Fiji, Executive of the FASANOC Executive Board, as well as a long serving President of the FASANOC Women in Sport Commission.

Inaugurated in 1990 by the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame is an everlasting tribute to sportsmen and sportswomen of the country.

The Fiji Olympic Order on the other hand was inaugurated in 2001 to recognize the invaluable contributions of volunteers in the areas such as sports administration, sports management, coaching/technical aspects of sports development and sports medicine.

Forty three all-time Fiji sporting greats have been inducted into the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame and FASANOC is proud of all the Fiji Olympic Order recipients that total 24 recipients to date.
