OSEP Delivers MISO Course

SUVA 12, July. The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) hosted an Oceania Sports Education Programme (OSEP) week long Management course which involved several national sporting federations last week.

National Federations including Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Cycling, Darts, Hockey, Squash, Swimming, Triathlon, Volleyball, Fiji National University and FASANOC staff took part in the Management in Sporting Organisation Course (MISO) which was facilitated by Kiliati Enterprises.

Participants were taught about the structure of sport, effective meetings, financial management for clubs and national federations, marketing and sponsorships, event and facility management, club and federation governance and planning for development.

The course was a step towards working with National Federations to ensure that through the capacity building of their members, their objectives would be aligned to FASANOC's Strategic Plan for 2017 – 2021. This would in turn help FASANOC achieve its vision to "Inspiring the people of Fiji through sports excellence".

Fiji National University's Iliesa Namosimalua said the course would ensure that he would be better able to execute his duties on a national level.

"We have learnt so much over the week long course, now it is the time to take what we learnt and to apply it to our working area," he said.

Fiji Football Felisha Pickering said the course was important because it would help them be better administrators.

"Fiji Football is one of the bigger National Federations so to learn all that we have during the week long course is invaluable," she said.

"Now applying what we learnt with our National Federation will be a challenge but one we are better equipped to face."

By delivering such courses, which are part of the OSEP pathway, FASANOC is working towards establishing a National Accreditation Scheme to use as a basis of selection of Team Management and Volunteers who serve Team Fiji to the Olympic Games, Pacific Games and Commonwealth Games.

The different types of courses provided by OSEP will provide a sound and consistent grounding to team management and officials who wish to officiate as a member of the athlete’s entourage, the important group of personnel who surround an athlete as he/she prepares to excel as a representative of Fiji.
