Team Fiji Rugby Men's and Women's will know who they will face during the 2018 Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast, Australia after an announcement by World Rugby representatives earlier this week.
The Men's team will face off against Wales, Uganda and Sri Lanka while the Women's team will face against Olympic champions Australia, England and Wales.
Overseen and sanctioned by World Rugby representatives, today’s draw ceremony saw 16 teams divided into four pools for the men’s competition while eight participating nations for the first ever women’s Rugby Sevens competition at a Commonwealth Games, divided into two pools.
In the men’s competition, teams were drawn into pools of four. The top four ranked teams were allocated top spot in each pool, with random draws conducted for each band of four teams (5-8,9-12 and 13-16) based on their current World Rugby rankings.
The draw was highly anticipated with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games set to be the toughest ever with only the top ranked team from each pool to advance to the semi-finals and play for medals.
The draw for the women’s competition saw the eight teams split into two pools. The top two ranked teams (New Zealand number one and Australia number two) were allocated top spot in each pool, with random draws conducted for each band of two teams following the same format as the men’s draw (teams 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8). The top two teams from each pool will progress to the semi-final and play for medals.
The allocated pools will determine the match schedule for the preliminary round-robin stage of the competition, with each team to play all teams within their pool once (three games).
The preliminary matches commence at Robina Stadium on Friday 13 April before the competition culminates in the Semi-finals and Gold and Bronze medal matches on the final day of GC2018 competition, Sunday 15 April.
