Maraia Lum On graced the pages of Fiji press with her Lawn Bowls performances for over 12 years as a winner of numerous Club and National Bowling events and as a representative of Fiji to regional and international competitions.
Maraia Lum On has an impressive South Pacific Games record. In 1979, in Suva, she was a dual Gold Medallist, winning Gold in the Singles and Gold in the Pairs competition. In 1991, in Papua New Guinea, Maraia Lum On became a dual medallist again winning Gold in Singles and Bronze in Pairs.
The jewel in her crown however has been her outstanding performances on the international stage, particularly at the Women's World Bowls Championships. In 1981 Maraia Lum On competed at the Women's World Bowls Championships in Toronto, Canada and won international acclaim by winning the Silver Medal in the Pairs competition with her partner and fellow Fiji Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Willow Fong. At the same Championships, four years later, in 1985, in Melbourne, Australia, Maraia Lum On's stature as an international bowler was firmly established by a Silver Medal win in the Singles and another Silver medal win in the Pairs competition, again with compatriot Willow Fong. In 1986 Maraia Lum On had the honour of being joint flag bearer with Willow Fong for the Fiji Team at the Opening Ceremony of the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Maraia Lum On won further international acclaim at the 1987 Mazda Pacific Games with a Gold Medal win in the Pairs, a Gold Medal win at the 1988 Australian Bicentennial Games in the Pairs, dual Gold Medals in the Singles and Pairs at the 1989 Mazda Pacific Games and a Silver Medal at the 1991 Mazda Pacific Games (now known as the Asia/Pacific Bowls Championships).
Maraia Lum On's dominance in the Singles and Pairs at National level and her consistent medal winning performances at national, regional and international tournaments are the measure of dedication and commitment that she gave to her sport of Lawn Bowls over the span of her 12-year reign as a top Fiji Ladies Bowler.
