Day 5 - Palau vs. New Caldonia
Palau showed up to play, and took care of business early, downing New Caldonia 10-2 in seven innings. New Caldonia had just moved a game up on Amercan Samoa yesterday for sole possession of second place, and now find themselves neck and neck again with only three days of play before the Gold Medal Game. Palau is now only one victory away from clinching a first place for the semifinals beginning on Tuesday.
Palau came out early in the first inning with a string of hits to load the bases for Drake Yoshiwo, who cleared the bases with a deep triple to right center, and later scored. The next two innings produced two more runs for Palau as New Caldonia found themselves in a 6-0 hole quickly. Palau added in a couple insurance runs in the later innings, but the story was the solid defense, cutting down on the errors and an admiral performance on the mound by Tkoel Iyechad. Ty Saiske came in to close out the game in the seventh.
New Caldonia started a step behind and just could not get it together to make a run at the undefeated team of Palau. David Duran led of the second with a triple trying to get things movin, but nobody could bring him in the last 90 feet. The first run was scored by James Selefen on a pass ball in the fourth inning, who also hit in Brieu Mallet with an RBI single in the sixth. New Caldonia now has only two losses in the tournament, the two times they faced Palau.
Palau controlled the tempo and the game on their quest for Gold.
