Group B: Match 8 - Eight goals enough for Vanuatu

AUCKLAND: Vanuatu approached their match with American Samoa last night with caution, resting a number of key players including sensational young striker, Jean Maleb, who was sitting on a yellow card and no doubt saved for tomorrow evening's Group B decider against New Zealand.

But even with a relative second string line-up, Vanuatu were still too good for American Samoa scoring five goals in the first half en route to a convincing 8-0 win in cold, wet conditions at North Harbour Stadium.

To their credit, American Samoa competed well and was in a more positive mood pressuring the Vanuatu team on defence and showing more adventure on attack.

Needing six goals to head of New Zealand on goal difference, Vanuatu achieved their goal in the 64th minute through replacement Manley Junior Tabe. Replacement Isaac Kapi slotted in the final two goals late in the second half to finish the scoring.

But aside from a superb hat-trick from striker Lorry Thompsen, it was far from a vintage performance by Vanuatu as they made a number of unforced errors and at times their passing was wayward. American Samoa also showed there were some chinks in their defensive alignment which coach Carlos Buzzetti will no doubt want to rectify before they face New Zealand who will easily provide their toughest test of the tournament.

Buzzetti was clearly unhappy at some of the execution, particularly in the second half where American Samoa did well to hold Vanuatu to only three goals. But that aside, some of the goals scored, given the conditions were superb and illustrated the flair, agility and individual skill of the Vanuatu players.
