Palau Wrestling Team to Compete in 2016 Oceania Championships
Palau’s Wrestling Team will be competing in the 2016 Oceania Championships on March 11 - 13 in Hamilton, New Zealand. Representing Palau will be Cristian Etpison Nicolescu, Blesam Tarkong and Skilang Temengil. All 3 athletes are currently ranked #1 in Oceania and Micronesia. All 3 athletes have been training hard over the past year. Both Cristian and Blesam have been training in Japan at Aoyama Gakuin University and Nihon University for over a month now while Skilang has been training in the USA. Among our athletes, Skilang is our returning veteran and Olympian from the Beijing Olympic Games who has demonstrated is dominance in the region. Skilang was also 1 out of 2 athletes among the list of Oceania countries that performed exceptionally well in the World Championships held in Las Vegas, USA last year.
All 3 wrestlers will be competing in the Oceania Championships in New Zealand, then return to Japan to train for 3 weeks before going to compete in the Africa / Oceania Olympic Qualifier in Algiers, Africa from April 1 -3. In order to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games later this year, they will have to rank in the top 2 spots in their respective weight division at the Africa / Oceania Olympic Qualifications in order to qualify for the Olympic Games.
Belau Wrestling Federation would like to thank our Corporate Sponsor WCTC for their donation, Palau Pacific Resort, NECO Marine, HANPA and the Palau National Olympic Committee for funds received thus far. Since it’s an Olympic Year, we are still raising funds to attend the Olympic Qualifier. If anyone else is able to help us, please let us know. Your donations are tax deductable and will help support our athletes in the quest to qualify for the Olympic Games and our wrestling program. Again, special thanks to all the athletes families and friends for your continued support.
