World Medal Target for Weightlifting

Young 17 year old Weightlifting sensation Eileen Cikamatana will be going for a medal at tonight’s World Youth Championships.

Eileen will be taking part in the 69Kg Weight Category at 7:00pm Malaysian Time. This will be 1:00am Tuesday Fiji time.

While Elieen may be the youngest competition in  the “A” Group, she is known to be a fighter.

At the Oceania Weightlifting Championships, in Suva in  May, she gave veteran Apolonia Vaivai a stiff competition and lost out by only 1Kg. In Suva she had lifted 205Kg.

She will have some fierce competition from a strong field of 17 lifters. Her main competition will come from:

  • Rebekah Jade – Great Britain, who lifted 227 Kg and finished ahead of Apolonia Vaivai in the same weight category in Rio Olympics
  • Jing Tang – CHINA who has lifted 214Kg this year
  • Angie Palacious – Ecuador who is lifting around 210Kg

The Championships is taking place in Penang, Malaysia and will continue with the Commonwealth Championships. A total of 5 Fiji Athletes are in Malaysia.

Fiji has never won a medal at any World Championships level and are hopeful that today’s performance will change this.
