Weightlifting Fiji is looking to qualify two lifters for this year’s London Olympic Games. Fiji will take part in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Samoa from May 22nd to May 26th 2012.
The Top 5 Men’s Team and the Top 4 Women’s Team will qualify one lifter each for London. The Fiji Men’s Team will compromise of 7 lifters, out of which 6 will score towards Men’s Team Points.
In the Women’s Team event, Fiji is looking to enter 5 lifters, of which 4 will score towards the Women’s Team Points.
Current Top Men’s Teams that are in contention to qualify include Australia, Samoa, Kiribati, FIJI, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Tonga and Nauru
The Top Teams in the Women’s Competition that are in contention to qualify include Australia, Samoa, PNG, Fiji, Solomons, New Zealand and Nauru
If Fiji were to earn the two places, then the one Men’s Place for London will be taken up by Manueli Tulo, with School Teacher Coach / Athlete Paula Peniasi Tawai as his reserve.
In the Women’s Event, our nominee for London is Maria Liku with Apolonia Vaivai as the alternate.
Meanwhile both Manueli Tulo and Maria Liku have a good chance to qualify on individual merit, if they lift their personal bests by about 10kgs each.
Manueli Tulo, who finished 21st in the World Championships will need to lift around 255kgs in Samoa.
Meanwhile, Maria Liku, who finished a credible 25th at the World Championships in Paris in November 2011, can qualify if she lifts around 190kgs.
Manueli Tulo has returned to Noumea, while it is expected that Maria Liku and Apolonia Vaivai will leave for Noumea this week to train under the watchful eyes of High Performance Coach, Paul Coffa, at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute.
