Weightlifting Success at Pacific Games
Weightlifting Fiji is very proud of an outstanding performance by its very young team of lifters, who won a total of 7 Gold, 6 Silver and 8 Bronze – the best performance ever.
The 7 Gold medals were the best of all Fiji sports at the Games followed closely by Karate and Shooting with 6 Gold medals each.
The 21 medals were won by a team of 11 lifters comprising 6 men and 5 women. Apart from Co-Coaches Joe Vueti and Paula Peniasi Tawai, the other 9 lifters are under the age of 21.

Weightlifting Fiji Secretary Christopher Yee said that Apolonia Vaivai who was only 2 Kg away from Gold in each of the snatch and clean & Jerk and only 4 kg away in her total lift.
Apolonia has just completed her first year of lifting and is now the 3rd best all-time female weightlifter Fiji has ever produced.
This performance is a great achievement when you consider that in 2008, there were only 3 active lifters in the country, before this new development was initiated. we now have one of the most active competition calendar in the country.

Our next major competitions include the World Championships in France in November 2011 and the Oceania Championships in May in Samoa. These will act as Olympic Qualifiers and we are hopeful of qualifying two athletes on merit.
Weightlifting Fiji will be celebrating their 50 years of its affiliation with the International Weightlifting Federation later this year.
