Tulo top of the pile (Fiji Times - Rashneel Kumar)
FIJI'S top weightlifter Manueli Tulo has received a major boost ahead of the Olympic Games in London.
In the latest Commonwealth rankings released by the Commonwealth Games Federation, Tulo is ranked on top in the men's 56 kilogram category.
His coach and the Oceania Weightlifting Institute director Paul Coffa said the release of the rankings was timely as the Levuka lad was preparing to make his debut in the Olympic Games.
"Tulo could have won probably Fiji's first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 but unfortunately for Fiji, they are no longer part of the Commonwealth," Coffa told Times Sports from Noumea, New Caledonia yesterday.
Coffa said the London Olympics would have been good exposure for Tulo, with two years left for the next Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. "Let's hope Fiji can make the 2014 Commonwealth Games because there is a potential gold medallist (in Tulo)."
Tulo and Maria Liku are in the final stages of their Olympic Games preparation at the institute in Noumea.
Coffa said Liku was doing well at the trainings while Tulo was still recovering from the injury he sustained at the Oceania Weightlifting Championship in Samoa. "Maria Liku is doing exceptionally well and is in excellent form. She should be able to do well at the Olympics and has a good chance of finishing in the top 10," Coffa said. "While Tulo is recovering well and should be fine before the Olympic Games."
Coffa said it was important for both lifters to maintain the focus when intensity was high to avoid any injuries. The London Games is from July 27 to August 12.
