Weightlifting Fiji Secretary Christopher Yee said that Apolonia Vaivai who was only 2 Kg away from Gold in each of the snatch and clean & Jerk and only 4 kg away in her total lift.

Apolonia has just completed her first year of lifting and is now the 3rd best all-time female weightlifter Fiji has ever produced.

This performance is a great achievement when you consider that in 2008, there were only 3 active lifters in the country, before this new development was initiated. we now have one of the most active competition calendar in the country.

Weightlifting Fiji would like to thank the Government of Fiji-Ministry of Youth & Sports, FASANOC, ONOC, Olympic Solidarity, OWI, Paul Coffa & Family, FINTEL, Westpac, JR White, Samba, Patterson Brothers Shipping, Air Pacific, Dahia, Oceanic, Star Printery, Samba!, Total, Fiji Water, Sun Insurance, Tourism Fiji, Fiji Sports Council, Levuka Community.

Our next major competitions include the World Championships in France in November 2011 and the Oceania Championships in May in Samoa. These will act as Olympic Qualifiers and we are hopeful of qualifying two athletes on merit.

Weightlifting Fiji will be celebrating their 50 years of its affiliation with the International Weightlifting Federation later this year.
