TEAMS from East and West New Britain, New Ireland, the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Madang, Northern and the National Capital District, will be vying for the ultimate prize at the 2010 National Touch Football championships.
The event, which kicked off yesterday in Kokopo, East New Britain, has attracted fans in the province who will be enjoying a feast of touch football this weekend.
The tournament is the second for Touch Football PNG and those eligible to participate are affiliates of the body for the last two years.
ENB Touch Football Association interim president Melly Tamlik said most of the participating teams were already in the province for the four-day event.
Tamlik said only two centres, hosts ENB and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, would be fielding teams in all eight divisions – U21 boys, open men’s, women’s and mix, senior men’s, women’s and masters.
Except for New Ireland, who will be fielding teams in six divisions, the rest of the centres will have teams participating in two or three categories at the tournament.
The event is held at the Takubar wire field and Vunapope soccer field with all teams participating followed by the knockouts tomorrow and the finals expected on Sunday.
Players who are participating in the championships will have the chance of being selected in the national side for the World Cup in Scotland later this year.
