Nadi Defeats Tailevu In Under 19 Tournament

Nadi started their Under 19 Western Conference cricket tournament with a win over Tailevu today at Central College in Lautoka.

Playing their first match of the tournament they scored a three wicket win thanks to good all-round performances from Apakuki Cokavuadreu and Vakarau Tauyesa.

Tailevu, who were coming off a first up win over Lautoka the previous day, batted first but could only post a meagre score of 73.

Peceli Nacolaivalu (13) was the only batsman to reach double figures as Cokavuadreu and Tauyesa ripped through the Tailevu batting line up.

Cokavadreu, bowling his left arm medium pacers, took 6 for 33 from 9 overs in a player of the match performance.  He was well supported by Tauyesa (3 for 11 from 5 overs) as they restricted their opponents to a reachable target.

However, the Tailevu bowlers weren’t willing to give up on the match and fought back at the top of the Nadi innings.

Nacanieli Bola (4 for 32) and Lote Sauleka (3 for 27) worked their way through the Nadi top order to leave the match in the balance at 7 for 50 when Tauyesa strode to the wicket to join Cokavadreu.

Realising that the match was evenly poised Tauyesa scored a quick-fire 20 not out with some big hitting to lead his team to victory, ably supported by Cokavadreu (10 not out).

Today’s result leaves Nadi and Tailevu with one win each.  Tailevu will play Suva on Friday in Suva in their third match of the tournament, while Nadi will have to wait until Thursday when they host Suva at Namaka Public School.

Tomorrow’s match will see Suva play Lautoka at Central College, Lautoka before the capital city team backs up to play Nadi the following day.
