Strong Blues Squad Announced For WCL 5
The Fiji Blues team to play at the World Cricket League Division 5 competition has been announced after selectors picked an experienced squad for the tournament in Nepal next month.
The 14 player squad will be led by first time captain Joe Rika who takes over the reins from the injured Joe Sorovakatini, while two vice captains have been appointed, Joe Dabea and Iniasi Cakacaka. All three players have experience playing at World Cricket League level and will provide strong leadership for the squad.
“It was a difficult job for the selectors to narrow down the squad to 14 players from our training squad,” said Cricket Fiji General Manager Martin Shaw. “However, we feel that the players selected have earned their place in the team with strong performances over the last year.”
Players were selected after taking into consideration performances during the tours of Vanuatu and Samoa during 2009 as well as in the recently completed Elite Player League.
“It is a strong squad that we have picked,” said Blues Coach Steve Jenkin. “We feel that we have the right blend of youth and experience that will give the team a good shot at performing well at WCL level.
“The fact that three of our players are under 20 years of age shows that we have some talent coming through the ranks to mix with the experienced players who have already played at WCL tournaments in the past.”
The full squad is:
Josefa Rika (Captain) (Western Suburbs, Brisbane), Josefa Dabea (Suva Capitals), Iniasi Cakacaka (Western Bulldogs), Josaia Baba (Wests Illawarra), Peni Rika (Suva Capitals), Viliame Yabaki (Sigatoka Dunes), Joji Bulabalavu (Sigatoka Dunes), Maciu Gauna (Wests Illawarra), Jikoi Kida (Suva Capitals), Tukana Tavo (Western Bulldogss), Tavo Sorovakatini (Western Bulldogs), Sakaraia Lomani (Western Bulldogs), Lee Waqa (Sigatoka Dunes), Greg Browne (Western Bulldogs)
