New 2012 SIBF Executives Ogranize Top 6 Challenge

The Solomon Islands Basketball Federation (SIBF) is calling on all basketball teams in Honiara to start preparing for this year’s competition which is set to take place in September.

Newly elected SIBF President, Mr. Brian Pongotapu confirmed this in a statement last week, adding that that the federation will organize a top six basketball challenge for both the men’s and women’s open category.

Pongotapu explained that the competition will run for the next couple of months before the end of this year, and wants teams to now start organizing themselves before the league kicks off on the 1st week of September.

“I am calling on all the affiliated clubs and teams to start preparing their players, and all team managers to contact SIBF as soon as possible to confirm their participation”, Pongotapu said.

Meanwhile, the basketball federation also announced that high schools in and around Honiara will also start their competition next week.

SIBF is calling on all sports masters in Honiara schools to contact either the federation President or Secretary through the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI) office at Kukum anytime this week or early next week, for more information.

So far two schools have already confirmed their participation for the 2012 High School Basketball Competition and they are KG Six School and Betikama Adventist College.

“Since the election of new federation executive members early this month, our immediate priority goal is to start a competitive league”, Pongotapu added.

“We are looking at getting the major clubs back into action and to also carry out an Under 19 selection once the High School competition is over before November”.

Pongotapu added that SIBF is keen on re- building the basketball momentum from these competitions and move on to all the basketball goals and developmental endeavours earmarked for 2013 and onwards.

The newly elected executive members were voted into office last week after SIBF sought support from the National Sports Council (NSC) and the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI), upon advice from FIBA Oceania and ONOC.

They are Brian Pongotapu (President), Delma Nori (V/President), Uriel Matanani (Secretary), David Topue (Treasurer) and Lysa W Simeon, Brian Fatai and Waige Tuereke as members.
