PBRA celebrates the Holidays

They maybe the strict judge when it comes to officiating the games, but members of the Palau Basketball Referees Association (PBRA) know how to party as they celebrate their Christmas party last December 27 at the Penthouse Hotel.

PBRA president Sinton Soalablai in his remarks thanked all the referees who made sacrifices in officiating games for the whole year. He also made special mention to PBF vice president and development officer Topps Sungino and PBF secretary/treasurer Jubilee Kuartei for their efforts in running all the programs for basketball.

“They are the backbone of basketball and I would also like to make special mention of the efforts put up by Myers Techitong and Logan Ngiriou. We welcome the next generation of referees and it will be up for them to pick up were we left and bring the game to the next level,” Soalablai added.

He emphasized that as referees one should respect the players, coaches and the game itself. He added that this mentality should start at home and in the family.

“Basketball is a hard sport, it is for smart people because it brings out sweat from the body of the players and juices from the brains of the coaches. Respect should be given always to the sport and everyone should do their contribution,” Soalablai stressed.

On the other hand, PBF vice president and development officer Topps Sungino stated that if referees fail, they should learn from the their failures and challenge their selves in order to improve in their field.

“We must try our best all the time. We must challenge ourselves as we officiate the game. There will be misunderstanding along the way, but let us always be reminded that it is part of the game and we must learn and move on from that,” Sungino said.

Also present during the event were Koror Legislator elect Jason Nolan, national coach Ziske Asanuma, PBRA vice president Edison Chokai and other referees and table officials.

The event had games for those who came and special items were also raffled off that capped the night.  By Peter Erick L. Magbanua (Island Times News)
