M15BT DAY FOUR

The first women’s semi final was as expected a blow out between Guam and the smaller Belau team. The constant pressure of the Guam defence and their full court zone press was too much for the inexperienced Belau players and they struggled to get a score for much of the game. Still they did not give up, but unfortunately the spread of scores does not indicate their efforts in the game. Final scores 103-14.

Guam men met up with CNMI in the first men’s semi final and ran away with an early lead in the first quarter. The CNMI team managed break even with the Guam juganaut machine in the second quarter but Guam got revenge in the third by blowing CNMI out by 25 points in that quarter. The final quarter was of little consequence to the outcome and Guam won comfortably y 114-59.

CNMI women met up with Palau in the second women’s semi final and got away to a flyer in the first quarter to lead by 16 at the first break. The crowd was looking for the same effort from Palau as in their game against Guam the previous evening but it was not to be until the last quarter when their game rose to a much higher level. However, the lead given to CNMI was just too large to make up and CNMI ran out winners by 56-34.

In the second men’s semi final it was left up to Palau to prevent an all Guam final by stopping the Guahan team from advancing. Palau opened with a more aggressive defence that had the Guahan team struggling to find the bottom of the net. Palau’s main scorers in Marvic Ngchar, CJ Olkerill and RB Dorado were making the most of every opportunity and they were suported well by their team mates at the defensive end. Guahan managed to match Palau in the second quarter to see them behind at the main break by 18 points. Guahan won the third quarter and matched Palau in the fourth but the early lead to their opposition proved too much and Palau won by 70-52.

So to today’s medal round which will see the Palau women take on their sisters in Belau for Bronze and Guam women will face a determined and improving CNMI team in the Gold medal game.

The men’s Bronze medal game will be between Guahan and CNMI and should prove to be a real battle. Traditional rivals Guam and Palau will face off against each other in the men’s Gold medal game. Expect Palau to draw much strength from the large crowd support.
