Workbooks and Court Action Makes Learning More Fun

According to German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, "Knowing is not enough, we must apply." Many of the basketball coaches on Guam played high school basketball and decide to coach later on. Many teach the kids the wrong skills because they do not know how to connect reasons and drills. This is why it is difficult to break bad basketball habits with kids if they decide to continue playing because they were taught and showed the wrong way.

The Level 1 coaching workshop teaches, coaches with some experience, the correct way of conducting drills and which drills are more suitable for different age groups.  The Level 1 coaches-to-be were given a Level 1 workbook for them to read and follow while participating in the workshop, conducted by Ryan Burns. The workbook explains and show diagrams of how and why drills are done. Some people learn by simply reading the material and some learn by action.

The Level 1 coaches-to-be were put in player mode while Burns acted as the Coach. Questions of "How tos" and "What Ifs" were answered with actions instead of drawings on the chalkboard. Burns showed them warm up drills, stretches, the correct way of shooting, and more. They also attended Team Guam's Men and Women's practices which were being held at the University of Guam (UOG) Field House.

The 15 hour credit workshop ended on September 24, 2009. The new Level 1 Coaches were awarded with a Certificate.
