RKS makes basketball debut

RATU Kadavulevu School is one of the new schools making its debut in the 2018 Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship at the FMF Gymnasium at Laucala Bay, Suva.

The school fielded three teams to compete in the three-day championship. Under-15 team manager Asenaca Raloka said the idea of forming a basketball team for the school came from the school principal.

“Our principal wanted to see if we could try out other sports because the school’s main focus was always on rugby and athletics,” said Raloka.

“Ever since the idea was brought up, we have had good turnouts during training sessions. There were a good number of boys that were interested during training despite the Deans Trophy rugby games.”

Raloka said it would take time for the students from Lodoni to develop their skills in the game.

“This tournament has been an eye-opener for the boys, especially those who have never played basketball before. “The teachers and managers are glad the boys are not belittled when they see other schools that have been competing for a long time.”

RKS team officials were thankful to Basketball Fiji officials who conducted coaching clinics for their players in the past weeks.

Meanwhile, the RKS U15 team lost in its debut at the annual tourney yesterday.

Results at hand yesterday: U15 boys: RKS 18 vs 32 SVC, U19 BOYS: MBHS 25 vs 3 SVC, GHS 19 vs 28 Saint John’s College, Yat Sen 27 vs 17 Tilak, RKS 13 vs 18 All Star Boys.
