This September, the inaugural Guam Masters Games will host 10 sports, with various age divisions within each sport. Leo Palace in Yoña has been selected as the sports village for the 2012 games where golf, baseball and softball finals, and running and grappling competitions will take place.

Basketball, volleyball, and table tennis will be played in nearby villages at various locations, while tennis matches will be at the Hagåtña and Tiyan courts. Paddling will take place in Tumon Bay or Boat Basin.

Sports directors are being appointed to develop schedules, recruit, and manage competition for each sport. These sports directors have considerable experience operating competitions and are qualified by the board of the Guam Masters Federation and event management team. In the near future, sports directors will announce schedules, rules, initial age divisions and registration information.

The baseball and softball sports directors, Bill and Justin Bennett, have expressed their thoughts on the first ever Guam Masters Games: “We are extremely excited about this event and the initial feedback from the baseball and softball community has been outstanding. We expect some great competition!”

Sports director for running John Wesolowski and Manny Hechanova announced: “We are planning for both a 10K and half-marathon, but discussion is ongoing about adding several track and field events including the 400 and 800 meters.”

The 2012 Guam Masters Games expects to reach a limit with athletes and teams. Event organizers are encouraging all interested to register immediately once the fields are opened. Registration period is expected to begin June 1 and a number limit for teams and participants will be announced at that time.

According to EJ Calvo, managing director, “The Master’s Games will grow each year into one of Guam’s largest annual sports events in the region, with participants coming from all over Asia and the Pacific and new sports being added in the future.”
