The first day of the trials was held for students in the 6 to 12 age group and featured representatives from Saipan Community School, Dandan Elementary School, Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School, William S. Reyes Elementary School, and Agape Christian School.

The organizing Northern Marianas Athletics is doing the series of qualifying events by zones and yesterday's trials were for Zone A. Zone B will have its qualifier today with students from Whispering Palms, Oleai, Kagman, San Antonio, and Brilliant Star competing, while Zone C's Koblerville, Saipan International School, Mt. Carmel School, San Vicente, Tanapag, and Garapan will join the trials, starting tomorrow.

Week 1 of the qualifiers for 6 to 12 age group (elementary division) features four events-the 60m, 100m, and 200m runs and the long jump for both boys and girls.

For the high school (U18) and junior high school (U14) divisions, qualifiers will begin this Thursday. Many-time champion Marianas High School leads this year's participants and will be challenged by Kagman, Saipan Southern, SIS, Marianas Baptist Academy, and Agape. In the junior high, Hopwood is the perennial contender and the Hilitai will go up against Chacha, SCS, MBA, Agape, Whispering Palms, and SIS.

The high school and junior high will have qualifiers in the 60m, 100m, 200m, and 1,500m runs, discus, and shot put this week.

For Week 2 of the trials (April 1 to 4), Zone B participants will compete first for the 400m, 800m, and 1,500m run and softball throw, while Zone A and Zone C schools will have their turns on April 2 and 3, respectively. For the high school and junior high qualifiers on April 4, students will see action in the 400m, 800m, and 3,000m races, javelin throw, and long jump.

The qualifying events will continue in the last three weeks of April with schools from the three zones competing in alternate schedule and the high school and junior high divisions having their trials every Thursday. Qualifiers will run from 4pm to 7pm, so the public is encourage not to use the track facility and give way to the students.

Students making the grade in the qualifiers will earn slots to the 2013 PSS/McDonald's All Schools Championships, which will run from May 8 to 10.
