2013 High school, jr. high trials kick off

Over 100 students from both public and private schools on Saipan competed in Day 1 of the trials for the 14 and 18 age group and they participated in the 60m, 100m, 200m, and 1,500 runs and shot put and discus throws.

“We have some good results in the 60m run. There are new runners both in junior high and high school who have potentials,” said tournament director of Northern Marianas Athletics coach Elias Rangamar.

Schools invited to join yesterday's trials were Hopwood Junior High School, Marianas High School, Saipan Southern High School, Saipan International School, Kagman High School, Whispering Palms, Saipan Community School, Marianas Baptists Academy, Mt. Carmel, and Agape Christian School.

Yesterday's qualifiers were the last for Week 1, as events for elementary division (U8, U10, and U12) were held last Monday until Wednesday. NMA will have four more weekly trials before selecting students who will compete in the 2013 PSS/McDonald's All Schools Championships that will run from May 8 to 10.

The association is also implementing the same rules it used in selecting the qualifiers last years. All records in the trials will be compiled and the Top 12 best marks in field events will earn slots to the championships, while only the Top 8 in the running and jumping events will qualify to the May tournament.

In the elementary division, NMA is implementing a zone system. For the sprints (60m, 100m, 200m), the Top 2 finishers in each zone will automatically qualify for the All Schools Championship, while then the rest of the times from all zones will be compiled with the Top 2 getting the last two tickets.

For the middle distance (400m, 800m, and 1,500m), throw (javelin, softball and shotput), and jump events (long and high jump), the Top 3 from each zone will make it straight to the championship, while the Top 3 from all zones combined will get the remaining slots.

Zone A is composed of SCS, Dandan Elementary School, Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School, William S. Reyes Elementary School, and Agape. Whispering Palms is in Zone B, joining Oleai, Kagman, San Antonio, and Brilliant Start, while Zone C has Koblerville, SIS, Mt. Carmel, San Vicente, Tanapag, and Garapan.

NMA will take a break from the trials next week to give way to the Lenten season and will resume action on April with Zone B holding qualifiers in the 400m, 800m, and1,500m run and softball throw. The same events will be held for Zone A (April 2) and Zone C (April) 3, while Week 2 of the high school and junior high trials is set for April 4.

The remaining qualifiers schedules are as follows: April 8 to 11 (Week 3), April 15 to 8 (Week 4), and April 22 to 25 (Week 5).
