PROVIDING ENCOURAGEMENT !
One reason for staging a Trials Meeting every month is so that
athletes can have a "yardstick" by which to measure the effectiveness
of their training. In fact this is the main reason. Another is to
achieve some REGULARITY OF COMPETITION. Last week we were disappointed
not to be able to continue this pattern, particularly for the two
athletes preparing for CYG in Pune in October. Their schedule includes
having this regular competition.
So this morning we started early
and found no other users for the High Jump area (Volleyball Court !)
and track ! We put on a 60m. race over 5 hurdles (at 91cm.) for Tonika,
who has been training hard on Sprints and Hurdles. Also the 3000m. for
Totirite who has been training with great reliability. The Field events
were mainly for the benefit of Raobu (Shot) and David (High Jump). As
you will see from the results, neither were at their best but did some
useful work before resuming training with a general Circuit. In HJ,
Aritana achieved a PB (and a better PB with a 4th. attempt !) Boitu, as
he showed in the Inter-School, has more ability in the horizontal
jumps, but today took advice and improved his technique. As with other
tall, heavy athletes, a mistake he was making was to attack the bar too
directly, and losing speed because the curve of his approach was too
acute. By moving him out wider, this gave him more control of his speed and a less sharp curve.Young Sunnity in the Shot was also not at his best, but both he and Raobu pushed their respective weights over 12m. Maybe they were still recovering from the Medicine Ball training session on Thursday !
EYES ON BEIJING !
The Kiribati Delegation left here on Thursday (July 31) and should arrive in Beijing on Tuesday. Kaitinano will have to catch them up but hopes to be in the Olympic city on Friday in time to be the flag-bearer in the Opening Ceremony ! This because there was a hold-up in the obtaining of her Chinese visa while training in Fiji ! The team has been routed via Narita (Tokyo) because Air Pacific has a special Olympic flight going that way ! This has necessitated all the group obtaining Japanese visas while in Fiji. One hopes that is the last of their complications !
RESULTS SUMMARY.

YM3000m. 1. Totirite Torooro. 13-22.2 PB

In the absence of some officials (en route to Beijing) and another taking a workshop in the Line Islands, it is largely thanks to Tekooki Teieka that we managed to complete even a reduced programme. Other athletes assisted e.g. as bell-ringer and lap-counter !
