ANTICIPATION !
As with all such Open advertised events, you can never be quite sure who will show !
Starting in 2000, we have staged the Dream Runs at about this time of year. In the first year, they were contested on the morning of the Womens' Marathon in Sydney, and so our sponsors called them the "Olympic Dream Runs". In subsequent years we changed the name to "Tarawa Dream Runs". However, the format has stayed much the same, i.e. starting the Half-Marathon at the Hospital at about 06.15 am., then driving down the main road to start a 10k. Road Race at about 06.45 am. (before the others arrive having done 11k.), then to the National Stadium to greet the first arrivals (usually the 10k. leaders) at about 07.25 am. We would expect the event to be completed by 08.30 am. and so to a late Sunday breakfast !
We have advertised this year in newspaper, on radio, and by word-of-mouth. We will see !
NOT TOO MANY DREAMERS ! (An up-date !)
In spite of the advance publicity, bed and other distractions proved too powerful ! Nevertheless three brave souls came for the 10k. race. There had been a shower earlier so the road was cool, and the sky stayed overcast until they had nearly finished ! The water station at about 5k. functioned OK and they had more water and buns during recovery !
The results were disappointingly slow - for no particular reason except lack of training ! Tekooki Teieka was the only male and finished in 51-02. The two girls ran steadily and together (safer when meeting aggressive dogs !) Banrenga Baikia just won in 67-53, beating Mira Taurannang in 67-54.
Then we all went to church !
