RABANGAKI STARS.
Winning the 200m. (on a flooded track) in 23.5 and the Discus with 34.58m., plus a reasonable Shot effort of 11.37m., were performances good enough to convince the KAA Executive Committee to make Rabangaki our "first pick" for our Samoa team. As in other Trials this year, sprints and throws have predominated - reflecting our coaching priorities.
HISTORIC HURDLES.
Having done some measuring and extension of the back straight (too much flooding on the home straight !), we staged a genuine 110m. Hurdles race for the first time ! The problem for star hurdler Beteru was that he has not done much training with 1.07m. hurdles !! Most of his sprint training has been over 0.99m. hurdles. Anyway, he and Itaaka raced and created a little piece of I-Kiribati Athletics history !
THROWERS SHARE SUPREMACY.
Our two best Senior male throwers shared the Shot and Discus honours with Rabangaki. It was good to see Taatia back competing, after a spell in hospital. Under-18 prospect Bonea was understandably disappointed with his Discus efforts - we have to do much work on consistency ! But the Committee has shown faith in him by selecting him for Samoa. He is still a beginner at Javelin and Shot but hopefully will do enough work in the next six weeks to have confidence and competence in competition. He has, even as a novice, easily achieved the required Entry Standards.
