TUG-OF-WAR REVIVED !
In the past two weeks in Tarawa all departments and associates of the Ministry of Finance have been busy after work every night playing off their "eliminators" for Volleyball and Football. Today, the teams came together for a Finals Meeting. As well as the two sports mentioned, they also played Table-Tennis, had a Marching competition (who can salute the guests in the most original way ?), and tried Tug-of-War. Unfortunately their first rope was much too thin and plasticky so they tried again later with a better rope.
It was not strictly legal, supposedly having six ladies and six gents in each team (total 12). However, it was entertaining while it lasted (about ten seconds !) and there were some in the teams who had some idea of technique ! They only had one pull per match !
This is the first time I have witnessed Tug-of-War since about five years ago, when some of the schools were staging competitions as part of their Inter-Team Athletics Championships. If we can get a copy of the Rules and a decent rope, we may try to encourage it.
