PNG's Fong named commissioner for Oceania Boxing.

PAPUA New Guinea has scored another milestone in the Oceania boxing scene with former boxing president Bernard Fong being appointed as a member of the Oceania Boxing Referee and Judge Commission.

Last week, the head of boxing Lohial Nuau was elected as an executive member of the Oceania Boxing Bureau (OBB).

In a fax message to Fong, chairman of the OBR/J Tomislav Papak said: "I wish to inform you that I have nominated you into R/J Commission for Oceania region as member. This nomination has been accepted."

Other members of the Commission include Papak (chairman - Australia), Heber Fataputio (v/chairman - Samoa), Wayne Rose (sec - Australia), Bob Lyall (treasurer - NZ) Nena Tauhiti (Tahiti) and Fong (PNG).
Papak who is a great supporter of PNG boxing union said he was disappointed that no PNG boxer were able to qualify for the Athens Olympic but that was of course due to the very strong competition.
Fong said he was happy with his appointment that now PNG has a representative at the Referee/Judge commission.

Fong who is also the chairman of PNG Sports Commission and has a long association with the sport of boxing as technical official and the then president. He was awarded life member of OBB three months ago.

The PNGABU president was first to congratulate Fong on his appointment.
"It's a great news for boxing. PNG is finally recognised for supporting and promoting the sport among the island nation through their voice at the regional meetings.

"It's good to have two representative now at the regional body which regulates boxing and also referee and judges in the region," Nuau said.
