Fiji scores first win at boxing meet

Metuisela Coriakula, fighting in the 57kg division, beat his Samoan opponent on points to qualify for the semifinals. However, his compatriot Mitieli Laca lost to Australia's Joel Drunker in the 54kg.

Fiji's best bet for the Oceania qualifier, middleweight Osea Nakanacagi, takes to the ring tonight. But, his Samoan opponent will be no walk over. The pair fought in the 2003 South Pacific Games with Nakanacagi just piping the burly Samoan on points.

Meanwhile, two other Fiji boxers failed at the first hurdle on Monday night. Vetaia Lave lost to New Zealander Kohukura Bentson in the second round of his 69kg bout. Nemani Rokobuli had his fight called off in the first round of his 91kg bout because of a bleeding nose.

Gold medal winners in the Oceania playoffs are guaranteed a place in the Athens Olympic.

Fiji is hopeful of gaining two gold medals at the meet.
