(Tuesday, February 08, 2005)

WITH the start of the season a week away Boxing Fiji is on the lookout for corporate business houses to boost the sport.

Boxing Fiji secretary Joseph Low said the 2005 season would commence next Tuesday at the Lower Civic Auditorium.

Close to 37 local boxers from all over the country will take part in the one-day tournament, putting on their best performance for a chance of being selected in to national squad for the upcoming international competitions.

He said the program would see two teams-Central/East and North/West slug it out for the Stan Brown memorial trophy.

He said the association's first regional quest would be to select a team to participate the up coming Oceania championships in Papua New Guinea in June.

"The seasons kicking off next week but our main task on the administration side of things is to attract sponsors to be able to market the sport," he said.

" This competition on Tuesday will be to select a team to the Oceania's but most importantly towards the 2006 Commonwealth games in Melbourne.

"Our plan and administrations work for the year has been set out and we are currently in talks with a few business houses but won't confirm anything from there until the deals are signed."

Low said the association was hopeful, come 2008 the sport would be able to send at least two representatives to the Olympics in Beijing, China.
