First day of teacher training… we had 20 participants who teach 5-12 year olds… some with class sizes of up to 48 children! We started the day with a prayer and introduction, and covered the overview of the BWF Shuttle Time Program. Then we introduced balloons to give the teachers a feel of the basic strokes that they will be coaching to their children. We then ran through the Shuttle Time resources available, which the teachers found very useful. Next up a demo match Tony Mordaunt (NZ) vs Sione Vainikolo (Tonga)… Tony was impressed with Sione’s improvement (Tonga wins)!!! This was a great opportunity for the teachers to see the game and learn the rules and how to score. We then moved the session onto court, giving the teachers an opportunity to play with a shuttle, and learn some overhead hitting and movement techniques to progress to hit over the net. These Tongan teachers are very athletic and competitive and before long we were playing games. After a delicious lunch we spent some time breaking out and learning about planning our sessions and working with large groups. The videos and resources provided by the BWF enabled the teachers to plan for their badminton sessions which are now part of the curriculum in Tonga.
