FEMALE ROLE MODELS ENCOURAGE YOUTH PLAYERS

Female Player of the Tournament 2014

Hellen and Kathy were asked about how hockey has impacted on their own lives, their thought are below...

Being selected to represent Vanuatu was very special and a proud moment for both their family and their community.

They have had opportunities to travel to Fiji, and Papua New Guinea and this has given them opportunities to see other countries, and inspired them to aim to get selected for more events.

Hellen and Kathy said they gained a lot from the practical skill clinics run by Ausytralian Olympians Jane Claxton  and Rachael Lynch, but more importantly it was the after practise sessions that Jane and Rachael led where they could ask about health issues that affect athletes both prior to and in competition.

Both Hellen and Kathy now have children of their own and they see the value of continuing their sport as it 'gives them good feelings after a physical workout' and it makes them positive towards 'going back home to look after the baby'. They both said that they have very supportive partners who  look after the children so that they can continue to play.
