As a result of the Australian Hockeyroos, Jane Claxton and Rachael Lynch, visit Jane and Rachael have organised through their National Squad members donations of safety gear, mainly mouthguards, to be presented to Pacific Island teams participating at Oceania Cup next month in Sydney. Jane and Rachael recognised after their visits to and trainings with players of all ages that many of the players did not have their own shoes, mouthguards or shin guards and were concernede about their safety particularly on uneven ground.
New Zealand Associations namely, North Harbour, Auckland, Waikato, Tauranga, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago have been magnificent in regularly supplying useed equipment. During CDO Gill Gemming's recent visit to Tonga she took a full set of uniform from Canterbury to outfit their two national teams taking part in Oceania Cup.These uniforms have provided the teams with training gear to make them feel special. Oceania Hockey Federation provided lighter sticks and new balls to be used in their school programmes, this can also be seen in the photo.
Last week Gill visited Vanuatu and was able to take ten pairs of shoes donated by Masters players from Dunedin and provide youth umpires with shirts donated by North Harbour. The photo demonstrated the excitement that the three Development Officers in Port Vila felt while unpacking the goodies.
