U21 Men's and Women's representatives from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu will compete for two spots available for the Junior World Cups held later in the year.
Noteable omissions from this event are Fiji, whose Men's and Women's National Teams both (by winning the FIH World League Round 1 Tournament held in Suva in December 2012) qualified for the FIH World League Round 2 Tournament, to be held in India in February. Due to the number of U21 players represented in the Fijian National teams, the World League Round 2 becomes a key focus for Fijian Hockey.
Also unable to compete are Samoa, and the women's teams from Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu, meaning the Women's competition will feature Australia and New Zealand fighting it out for ranking positions for the Junior World Cup.
The reduction in team numbers stems back to Cyclone Evan, which devestated Fiji in December, arriving the day after the completion of the Oceania Pacific Cup Tournament in Suva. Doe to the Cyclone, flights of the teams were cancelled and teams were forced to stay on in Fiji for a week longer than anticipated. As a result there were significant bugetary implications and so understandably funding became unavailable to this event.
Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu Men will relish the opportunity to compete against their higher ranked pacific neighbours Australia and New Zealand.
The pathway to the Junior World Cup starts on February 25 with the final being played out on Sunday 3 March.
