Oceania Olympic CQT
Not surprisingly Australia filled the first 3 places for both men and women.
Three members of the Samoan team had only been shooting the recurve bow for some two and a half weeks. This was intensive training in China to try to convert from the more mechanically assisted compound bow, to the very much “do it all by yourself” recurve bow. Despite this they fared remarkably well.
The match play saw several close encounters between the Australians with the number two men’s seed, Matt Gray, falling to the number four seed Taylor Worth in one semi final, 6 set points to 4.
The men’s gold medal match was another close affair with number one seed Ryan Tyack coming back from two sets down to tie the match and win the sudden death single arrow shoot off by scoring a 10 to Taylor Worth’s 9
In the women’s event Maureen Tuimalealiifano, one of the recurve “converts” from Samoa, managed to take a set from her more experienced Australian opponent Odette Snazelle in the bronze medal match which the Australian went on to win. Despite being seeded number one, Alice Ingley failed to win a set from her compatriot Elisa Barnard who won the gold medal match 6-0.
As a result ot this competition, Australia gained one male and one female spot at the 2012 Olympic Games, while Fiji won the other men’s spot and Samoa the second women’s sport.
