Clint Madrachelub has won gold in a dramatic first day of the spearfishing competition at Mangrove Bay.
Having speared 68.4 pounds of fish in his five hour expedition, Madrachelub fended off challenges from his fellow competitors to claim the gold.
While Madrachelub’s claiming of gold was conventional, his patriot, Moy Shmull’s relegation to the bronze medal was a source of controversy.
Although officially bringing in 39.6 pounds to claim third place, Shmull was denied a silver medal after a shark mutilated one of his fish, causing it to be declared disqualified.
This resulted in Guam’s Raymond Flores claiming silver with 49.9 pounds in what was both an exciting and controversial day.
