PNG Under-17 captain and vice named
After six weeks of hard training the PNG Under-17 team management has announced the team captain and vice captain.
The Papua New Guinea Football Association Under-17 squad will be aiming to do better in the OFC Under-17 men’s championships.
The tournament will be held on January 8-19.
The winner of this tournament will represent OFC at the Under-17 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.
The team management announcced Garem Alwin Komolong as captain and his vice is Aryton Yagas.
Both players have demonstrated leadership qualities over the last six weeks during their intensive training.
The announcement was made on Sunday afternoon at the Telikom Oval, Bisini soccer grounds.
Komolong is a current NSL player with Besta whileYagas played this season with POMSSOE (Port Moresby Schools: School of Excellence).
PNG needs to perform well as the defending champions are New Zealand.
Knowing that head coach John Davani continues to push the players physically and mentally in preparation for the championship in Auckland.
The team is scheduled to fly out on Thursday morning and will arrive in Auckland in midnight.
Despite the short acclimatization time in New Zealand, the boys are expected to put in a good first up effort against the highly fancied Vanuatu unit at the North Harbour Stadium on Saturday in the afternoon.
Can defending champions New Zealand retain the title gained in 2009 and book themselves a berth in Mexico? Or will one of the other island nations continue their improvement at youth level and earn an upset win?
