15U MEN:

Prince Edward Island 58 New Brunswick 68

New Brunswick avenged an earlier defeat to Prince Edward Island with a 68-58 victory to begin Saturday play.  New Brunswick opened the 4th quarter with a three point lead but outscored PEI 20-13 in the frame to finish the tournament on a winning note. 

Erik Nissen of New Brunswick was the Home Run Sports player of the game.  He had 12 points and 8 rebounds of NB.  PEI was led offensively by Mark Matheson’s 26 points. 

With the win New Brunwick finishes the national championship in 8th place, while 9th place belongs to team PEI.

Alberta 68 Newfoundland 55

Following in the footsteps of the 17U Alberta team, the 15U team disposed of Newfoundland 68-55 to claim the tournament’s 5th placing.  Newfoundland goes home finishing 6th, in a tournament of 11 teams. 

Alberta’s Joey Schwartz was the Home Run Sports player of the game.  Alberta’s leading scorer was Scott Lamb with 27 points.  Mitchell Hearn was Newfoundland’s leading scorer with 15 points.

British Columbia 86 Manitoba 69

British Columbia is the first medal winner of the 2010 Men’s National Championships by defeating Manitoba 86-69 in the bronze medal game.  BC turned an early five point lead to 17 at the half.  BC’s defence prevented any long scoring runs by Manitoba the rest of the way.

Manitoba’s loss to Ontario in the semi finals put them in the bronze medal game while British Columbia loss to team Quebec the night before in the second semi final. 

Chase Ruttenberg of BC scored 15 points on five of nine shooting and was named the Home Run Sports player of the game.  Junior Sesay continued his hot tournament with 23 to lead Manitoba.  Joshua Magpantay added 20 points in a losing cause. 

The next game on tap has British Columbia battling Saskatchewan for the bronze medal in the 17U category.

Ontario 82 Quebec 77

Ontario came from behind to defeat Quebec 82-77 in the 15U championship final.  It was a game of changing momentum as Ontario lead by 8 after one quarter but were down 12 going into the third quarter.  Ontario’s fourth quarter defensive pressure caused many turnovers which gave the Ontario side the lead with minutes left in the game.   Quebec had no answers for the pressure and as a result are now silver medal winners.

Ontario defeated Manitoba while Quebec got into the final by beating BC in their respective semi-finals on Friday. 

Cassidy Ryan of Ontario was the Home Run Sports player of the game.  He accumulated 10 points and had 8 rebounds in the win.  Quebec’s Noah Daoust had a game high 23 points and 15 rebounds. 

The last game of the championships is on next as Quebec and Ontario play for the 17U gold medal.

17U MEN:

New Brunswick 79 Manitoba 99

Manitoba leaves the tournament on a winning note with a 99-79 defeat of team New Brunswick.  New Brunswick had a five point lead after one quarter but Manitoba outscored them 25-14 in the second frame to go into half with a six point lead.  Manitoba ran away with the game with a 35 point fourth quarter. 

Chris Benevides of Manitoba was 5 for 8 from behind the arc and had a team high 22 points.  He was named the Nothers player of the game.  Brad States of New Brunswick had a game high 26 points.    

Manitoba finishes at 7th place in the 17U category while the 8th spot goes to New Brunswick.

Alberta 74 Nova Scotia 69

Alberta claimed the 5th spot with a 74-69 over Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia led after each of the first three quarters and held on for a 5 point victory to conclude the tournament for both teams. 

The Nothers player of the game was Alberta’s Tyson McIntyre.  McIntyre had 24 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks for the winning side.  Nova Scotia’s leading scorer was Fergus Duke who led his team with 19 points. 

With the loss Nova Scotia places 6th in the 2010 15U & 17U National Basketball Championship.

British Columbia 80 Saskatchewan 79

In a nail-biting finish, British Columbia held on for an 80-79 win to give the province bronze medals in both the 17U and 15U categories.  British Columbia jumped out to an eight point lead after the first quarter and built on that lead in the second quarter.  Going into half-time BC was up 11. 

The second half saw Saskatchewan start clawing away at BC’s lead.  Saskatchewan outscored BC 22-18 in the third to enter the fourth quarter down seven points.  The 4th quarter saw the teams trade buckets for most of the frame and down 4 with seconds on the clock, Saskatchewan hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it a one point final.

The Nothers player of the game was Malcolm Williams of British Columbia.  Malcolm had 20 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists to lead BC.  Joe De Ciman scored a game high 22 points for Saskatchewan. 

Next on centre court is the 15U gold medal match between Quebec and Ontario.  That is followed by the 17U gold medal game between the same two provinces. 

Quebec 86 Ontario 75

In a reversal of the 15U gold medal game, it was team Quebec who claimed the gold medal with a hard fought 86-75 win over Ontario.  With the score tied in the second quarter Quebec gained momentum by outscoring Ontario 26-14 in the second quarter to go into the half up by 12.  They increased their lead to 16 in the fourth quarter on way to a championship victory. 

Ontario got into the final by defeating Saskatchewan the night before.  Quebec defeated British Columbia for their spot in the final.   

Olivier Hanlan, who was also named the 17U tournament most valuable player, received the Nothers player of the game for his 30 point and 6 assist night. 

This game concludes the 17U National Men’s Basketball Championships.
