Country Cup

Basketball ACT recently sent a team to compete in the annual Country Cup Wheelchair Basketball tournament in Narrabeen, Sydney from 31-1 August 2010. The team comprised of 7 ACT competition players and 1 NSW junior player. With the competition open to all levels of disability and allowing abled body players to compete, the ACT Chargers were the only team that had all disability players.

Basketball ACT has been running a local Wheelchair Basketball Competition and all bar 2 players have not experienced wheelchair sports/basketball before the BACT Wheelchair Competition commenced. They were all very nervous about competing as the experience itself was new.

The ACT Chargers team played against other teams from Wagga (two teams), Illawarra, Taree and Coffs Harbour. The Chargers went undefeated in the round games winning all four games on the first day and the last round game the second morning. They had a very surprising win against a rough and experienced Illawarra who were the favourites to win the tournament. ACT defeated Taree in the Semi Final 35-19 and progressed through to the grand final to compete against Illawarra again. The tired ACT team trailed at half time by 12 points, and came back to win the game by 2 points, defeating Illawarra 34-32!

This is an amazing effort by the local ACT wheelchair group team and both the staff and community of Basketball ACT are very proud of all the players. It brings a positive experience to the players and also our local wheelchair competition. Congratulations to the following ACT players for becoming the NSW Country Cup Wheelchair Basketball CHAMPIONS.
