Basketball Winston Appeal sees new champs crowned

Basketball Fiji's Winston Appeal tournament held at the Fiji Sports Council's Vodafone Arena in Laucala Bay over two days earned a special surprise with new champions being crowned this Easter with the USP Islanders men and Dynamic Redz women reigning supreme after two days of stiff competition.

The USP Islands coached by Manoa Puamau edged former champs Boston Whites 33-30 while the Dynamic Redz women lived up to their club name after defeating Sparks 26-14 on Saturday.

This year's Easter Games for Basketball Fiji was a special one given registration fees from participating teams were put toward the National Appeal for those around the country who suffered the wrath of Tropical Cyclone Winston in February.

Basketball Fiji Development Office Laisiasa Puamau says it was the least the sport could do to help given this year's Games was without the likes of western teams from Nadi and Lautoka due to their refocus on rebuilding in their respective areas.

"It was unfortunate that our western basketballer's could not make it to this year's event, we understand the hardships they would have faced and so we thought to dedicate this tournament to them and all those around the country by raising funds that could help them out in some way or another," says Puamau.

USP's win is something the tertiary represented outfit will be looking to mould as the new defending champions of the Easter Games.

Next up on Basketball Fiji's calendar are club games - plans are underway to possibly host an international event later this year.
