Shiver me Timbers!
by Linda Carr
The making of a wooden vessel is characterised by rich crafts and dedication. It is as much about the love of timber as it is the love of the sea. But the journey begins with the felling of that splendid forest tree, traditionally claimed by the strength of the axeman.
In 2016, the Wooden Boat Festival acknowledges this first step in the birth of these lovely boats. The Western Victorian Axeman’s Association will demonstrate their prowess over the festival weekend. This association is believed to be Victoria’s oldest axemen’s association, being formed by a few locals who got together to chop at the sports days in the late 1890’s. It became a regular feature at sports events around 1901.
The wood and chips will be donated to the Rotary Club of Geelong who will distribute for use within our region.
Check the Wooden Boat Festival program closer to the event for demonstration times.
