SQSA 16ft Skiff Sprint Championships

Racing report as quoted from QLD 16ft & 13ft Skiff Association on their Facebook page...

"A big thanks to the team at BSS for running the Qld 16ft Skiff Sprint championships. Unfortunately the breeze had too much east in it to allow for sailing in front of the club so under the guidance of Grand Master Geck we moved the course downstream to Colmslie and any doubts we had done the right thing were quickly erased once the first race got under way. The water was dead flat and the breeze was a perfect big rig north easter. Racing was fast and furious and the final result wasn't settled until the last race. All the competitors had a blast and the spectators had a great view from the jetty at Colmslie. Now for the serious business.

From the start of the first heat it was obvious the Qld Fire Truck was going to be tough to beat. They got to the first top mark just in front of Baa and the Red Boat with Madison Tech (BAMM), BGN and Data 3 (ESP) all close behind. The Red Boat were struggling to bear away and and had a breakage soon after ending their day early while the rest of the crew fought it out downwind trying to keep pace with Fire Stopping. In the end they were too good with Madison coming in 2nd, Baa 3rd, BGN 4th and Data 3 5th.

Race two was much the same until the final downwind where a rare error by the Truckers let Madison slip inside at the final bottom mark who were good enough to hold on for the win with the Truckers 2nd, BGN won the battle with Baa for 3rd and Data 3 rounding out the field.

It was all down to the final race with all positions up for grabs. In the end Fire Stopping were too good and were able to take a well deserved win and become the Qld sprint champions and winners of the Bill Thorburn Shield. Madison skippered by the current 13ft skiff National Champion came in second. New comers to the fleet Baa showed plenty of speed to come in 3rd ahead of possibly the most experienced crew in all the lands BGN (only Lily prevents the average age being north of 60). Data 3 were missing the Dr but had a great fill in with young Cooper Richmond having his first sail on the bow of a 16. The red boat also full of young talent came in 6th after the unfortunate breakage. Still looked promising early with 2 of our best 13's sailors on board.

Lastly a big thanks to those that took the sabot kids for a sail after the race. The look on their faces was priceless and let us know it was definitely worth the effort. Your assistance is greatly appreciated and will go a long way to hooking these kids to skiff sailing in the future."
