AWKR on the Road – and in the pink!
by Rosie Colahan
Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta is on the road and on a roll!
Last weekend saw AWKR Chair Lynne Wilton visit the S80 Victorian Championships, making a splash of blushing pink across the regatta by decking out Association President David Judge and female crews in ‘AWKR Floats My Boat’ t-shirts to promote the S80 Division for the forthcoming AWKR.
With an overwhelming generous response, eleven boat owners from a fleet of 18 boats, signed up their craft for all female crews to compete in the 2017 AWKR, including Flying Circus reserving their boat for a Geelong crew and Hobson's Bay Yacht Club (HBYC) committing a boat for a 'Hobbos' women's team.
The reward for those boats that committed, was entry into a draw for a new spinnaker emblazoned with the AWKR logo crafted by long time supporter of AWKR, Doyle Sails. Mood Indigo a stalwart supporter of AWKR for almost seven years now was the worthy winner.
This weekend, Royal Geelong Yacht Club host the 2017 Festival of Sails (FOS) with the Passage Race from Melbourne to Geelong on Saturday 21 January. For the second year, the Deakin University Helmswoman Trophy will be contested and awarded to the best performed female helm in the Passage Race. Good luck to all female sailors competing across the regatta.
‘Popping up’ ashore at RGYC, AWKR and the Women & Girls in Sailing Committee (WGIS) will have an information stall. Whether you are a boat owner, mentor, female helm or keen female crew, don’t miss out on being part of this - come and register your interest and support for the exciting opportunities for training and racing that lay ahead in the coming months with the new Women’s Keelboat Training program and associated regattas. Boat owners entered in the Festival of Sails Regatta will also find a few pleasant surprises in their regatta showbags this year compliments of AWKR. Boat owners please ‘paint the town pink!’ by wearing your t-shirt to demonstrate support for our female sailors. For those committing to support the AWKR regatta with the loan of their boat, there will be a draw for a brand new spinnaker with the AWKR logo, an opportunity not-to-be missed!
With the Women in Sailing Challenge (WISC) in February, Brighton Lady Skippers Series (BLiSS) in April and Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series (PPWCS) all providing excellent racing experience, participation will see your team ‘in the pink’ to contest the 27th AWKR over the Queen’s Birthday weekend in June.
To kick off AWKR and the lead up regattas, the combined ‘Synergy Launch’ will be hosted by AWKR on Friday 10 February 6.30pm at Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, with the first lecture of the series ‘Building a Team for Success’.
