With the event just over a month away, Opti sailors around Australia are checking their boats, fine-tuning their skills & some warming up by competing at Sail Melbourne and Sail Sydney …. in readiness for the 2018 Gill OptiAUS Championships.  The event being held this year in Queensland at the Royal Qld Yacht Squadron on Moreton Bay starting with Teams racing on 3rd January 2018.

The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is no stranger to large regatta championships, but this …is the biggest Summer of Sailing ever.  This year’s Opti Championships will be one of the 14 Australian National Championships held back to back over the December 17 and January 18 period.  The RQYS staff and volunteer base are ready for a big 2 months of sailing action!

The 2018 Gill OptiAUS Championship event is the selection regatta that identifies over 40 of the top sailors that will form the Australian Optimist Sailing Teams and Development Squad that will represent Australia at IODA and regional events in 2018.

OptiAUS, encourages International sailors to participate in the event with 16 sailors from 6 countries are registered to join in - USA, Thailand, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Peru and Fiji.

But it’s not all about the pointy end of the fleet …. development of the class is a priority of AIODA & the 2018 Gill OptiAUS Championships is about all levels of Opti sailing.  The event offers younger and less experienced sailors the opportunity to participate in and experience the atmosphere of a big Regatta.  New sailors entering Green fleet will be coached every day of the event, focusing on boat handling skills and most of all, providing a positive holiday regatta experience that is safe and fun.

There will be time spent learning each day with the RQ Green Fleet Coaching team who are planning some fun & games to be had on and off the water.  Registration to the event can be made online via the OptiSHOP – www.optimist.org.au

Being part of this event both on and off the water is what memories are made of.
