Big Turnout At Geelong Spring Sail
by RGYC and Australian Sailing
The 2017 Rex Gorell Spring Sail Regatta and Coaching Clinic last week at Royal Geelong Yacht Club was a resounding success with over 140 competitors for the regatta and over 100 youth and junior sailors attending the Australian Sailing Coaching Clinic for two days.
The weather on Saturday was sunny with three of the four races for the Regatta able to go ahead before the wind picked up and cancelled all racing on the Sunday.
Despite losing one of the two days on the water, Royal Geelong Yacht Club Commodore John Kint said the annual event had again provided “young sailors from across the state a wonderful opportunity to develop their sailing skills and to compete in a very well managed regatta.”
“I thank and congratulate the 140 competitors and our 70 volunteers and coaches who contributed significantly to the success of the regatta. Our Club looks forward to continuing its very positive working partnership with Australian Sailing to further grow and develop this event, particularly in association with our exciting facility redevelopment plans.”
A great line-up of International and National coaches taught at the two-day Coaching Clinic which followed the Spring Sail Regatta over the weekend. Rod Hagebols, recently back from coaching in the United States, coached the 29ers and was a huge success.
Australian Sailing Team 49er sailors Sam and Will Phillips were the guest speakers at the Coaching Clinic BBQ. The brothers shared their memories of their time at coaching camps as juniors and their journey to the Worlds and European Championships with the youth and junior sailors.
Gavin Wall, Australian Sailing’s Regional Manager, was very happy with the event, especially the Coaching Clinic.
“Spring Sail and the attached two-day coaching camp marks the beginning of the season for a lot of our junior and youth sailors,” Wall said.
“It was great to see 140 sailors across the junior and youth classes on the water learning new skills and re-engaging with their peers. With a high class roster of coaches I am sure this event has set everyone up for a great season”.
