The Australian Maid International Youth Match Racing Regattahosted by the Darwin Sailing Club in Darwin, NT, was contested over the week by 6 teams representing 4 clubs from New South Wales and the NT including a team representing Mission Australia’s Youth program Spin 180

The 5 day competition saw the opening three days feature light and variable conditions with a strong tidal influence in the mornings followed by a nice South Easterly in the afternoons on the race track Although it was sometimes less than favourable conditions, the Race Committee managed to complete all 3 promised round robins before Saturdays Petit Final and Finals match.

Heading into the semi-finals three teams were close together with one clearly on top, posting 12 wins in the round robin stage to the others 9 wins. Local hero’s, Lynch and team made the cut by posting 9 wins in the round robin.

Abbott took out Cruickshank in the match for 5th and 6th place with Cruickshank’s smile as big as ever having taken 3 wins from some strong competition in his first regatta as a skipper and with some crew members on board that are very new to sailing and match racing. In the semis, Farquharson took out Lynch 2-0 and Grimes took out Evans making for an exciting final match up.

The finals saw some close and challenging racing conditions with Grimes (CYCA) taking the finals 3-0 over Farquharson (PRAYC). For Farquharson it was a great finish coming into this regatta ranked 873 after a great weeks racing.

“It was an awesome week up here in Darwin racing in great conditions”. We are really happy to have won the inaugural Australian Maid Youth Match Racing Regatta.  A big thanks to the Darwin Sailing Club for a great event – we will be back next year to defend our tittle! Said Grimes at the presentation.
