Opti Classes Dominating SA Youth Champs Entry List
by Australian Sailing
The South Australian Youth Championships set sail next weekend from Largs Bay Sailing Club with the Optimist fleet shaping up to be a hotly contested class.
With 20 entries across the various Optimist fleets so far, International Optimist Dinghy Association of South Australia President, Chris Auricht says that Opti sailing is stronger than ever.
“Optimist Sailing in South Australian has developed significantly over recent years with a number of South Australian Clubs identifying the class as a great pathway for youth sailors and we would expect to see 50 plus Opti sailors at the 2017 South Australian Youth Championships” Chris said.
“As a state class association in cooperation with Australian Sailing we have implemented a structured pathway program for Opti sailors from Club to State and National Levels.
“These structures, based on the goals of the State Association’s Strategic Plan, include an integral capacity building exercise that encourages successful sailors on the national and international teams to be role models for local sailors. There has also been a strong focus on building increased coaching capacity and participation at club and state level.”
The South Australian Youth Championships provide local Opti sailors with the perfect competition leading in to their State Class Championships which will be conducted in April.
“The Youth Championships are a great preparation event for Opti sailors who are gearing up for the State Championships in April,” Chris said. “This year we will be holding a clinic prior to the Championships which will offer all Opti Classes, including Green Fleet, the opportunity to be coached.”
The 2017 South Australian Youth Championships will be contested from Saturday March 25 to Sunday March 26.
