Junior Referee Development Officer appointed

The Sunshine Coast Football Federation is excited to announce the appointment of Junior Referee Development Officer Phil Townsend.

Phil has been involved in football on the Sunshine Coast since 2007 as president of Noosa Football Club and their premier men’s goalkeeper for a number of years. In 2012, Phil decided to join the referees to stay involved in the game and develop his level of knowledge of the laws. Since 2012, Phil has progressed his career as a referee within Sunshine Coast Football to be regularly appointed to referee Premier Men’s matches. Phil hopes he can use his own personal experiences, as a referee and father of three, and also his background in the police force, to help establish a strong base and network for Junior Referees on the Sunshine Coast.

Phil will join recently appointed head of Sunshine Coast Referees, Rachel Mitchenson, and focus his attention on the recruitment and retention of Junior Referees. He would like to establish and improve referee-club relations and assist in the change of culture towards our junior referees. As Junior Referee Development Officer, Phil would like to have a strong presence for young people and not only develop their refereeing skills, but assist in teaching life skills that young adolescents can take with them for the rest of their lives. He will provide support and guidance for referees on match day, as well as providing a link between clubs and referees.

Sunshine Coast Football are looking forward to working with the newly established referee department consisting of Rachel Mitchenson (Referee Development Officer), Phil Townsend (Junior Referee Development Officer), Tahlia Loffel (Appointments Officer) and Sunshine Coast referee board representative Will Wilson. The SCF Referee Department, with the support of the SCF board, are looking forward to meeting with all clubs to open a positive communication pathway. The future is looking bright for Sunshine Coast Referees.
