FQPL Round 10 Review: Peninsula hold on as they forge ahead

Round 10 of the FQPL continued the trend of goals coming from the previous week. Some were thrilling close contests. While others were far from it.

The results prove how tough it is for teams to match the consistency of the leaders Peninsula Power at the top of the table in trying to create breathing space inside the top four.

Shol hat-trick leads Easts within touching distance of top four

Youeil Shol continued his scoring run this season starring with a hat-trick to take his tally to 14 for the campaign in Eastern Suburbs 8-0 demolition job of the Wide Bay Buccaneers at Martens Oval on Saturday evening.

Already leading 4-0 at half time, Easts didn’t stop there as they piled on more misery for Wide Bay in the second half. Teams will no doubt be worried about the in-form Eastern suburbs side after another clinical display.

The big win has Eastern Suburbs FC now only a win and positive goal differential behind the Rochdale Rovers, Capalaba Bulldogs and Logan Lighting. While Wide Bay have the unfortunate stat of bringing up the half-century in goals conceded this season – conceding 51 in eight games.

Capalaba Bulldogs | 3 - 4 | Peninsula Power

John Frederick Sportsfields

Fast start enough for Peninsula despite second-half Bulldogs rally.

Peninsula Power have continued their impressive winning start to the season downing the Capalaba Bulldogs 4-3 at John Frederick Sportsfields on Saturday night.

Peninsula started brightly after scoring four goals inside the first 35 minutes, as Dean Briggs got on the scoresheet – his 10th goal of the season. Similarly, his teammate Oliver Smith netted his 9th goal of the campaign.

However, Capalaba weren’t about to roll over, as they launched an attempted comeback by scoring early and late in the second half to cause some nervy final minutes. The result extends Power’s lead at the top of the table to 13 points after Sunshine Coast lost to Souths United.

Southside Eagles | 0 - 4 | Rochedale Rovers

Perry Park

Late Njie hat-trick tames Eagles

Rochdale Rovers have kept the heat on everyone above them inside the top four with a flurry of goals in the second half – including a hat-trick from Benjamin Njie ensuring Southside Eagles weren’t taking home the points in a 4-0 win at Perry Park.

Southside will be disappointed at the end result after the score was only 0-0 at halftime. The win ensures Rochedale remain outside the top four only on goal difference to Capalaba.

Holland Park Hawks | 4 – 5 | Wolves FC

Wolves come from behind in thriller

Despite another brace from the league’s leading-scorer in Marek Madle, Holland Park Hawks were pipped to the post by Wolves FC 5-4 in a game riddled with twists and turns.

Alejandro Martinez was able to help his side come out on top by scoring a hat-trick to match the firepower of Holland Park’s Madle. After scoring before the break to trail 2-1 at halftime, Martinez added two in the second half, with substitute Danielle Romano and captain Jared Austin each scoring their first of the season to round out the win.

Only one point separates both sides now on the ladder, with Wolves just behind Holland Park in 10th position.

Souths United | 1 - 0 | Sunshine Coast Wanderers

Wakerley Park

Souths stun second-place Wanderers in tight affair

Souths United broke Sunshine Coast Wanderers’ unbeaten run with a shock 1-0 win at Wakerley Park.

The tension was there from the offset, with the game featuring four yellow cards. Jake Taylor broke the deadlock on the hour mark and Souths United did enough to hold on in the lowest goal-scoring game of the round.

Sunshine Coast now have to deal with three sides just below themselves, all within a win of jumping them on the ladder - with two points separating 2nd and 5th on the table.

Ipswich Knights | 1 – 5 | Mitchelton FC

Eric Evans Oval

Mitchelton overcome Knights

Mitchelton FC showed no concern as they convincingly ran out 5-1 winners against the Ipswich Knights on Sunday afternoon at Eric Evans Oval.

In this clash between two teams near the lower end of the table, but a double from Christopher Bacon and Jordan Dozzi either side of Bacon’s efforts to help Mitchelton jump clear early. With substitute Simon Biel getting on the scoresheet after coming on as a second-half substitute for Bacon. Ipswich struck late on with a goal through Samuel Watt, but it proved much too late.

The loss for Ipswich means they are now eight points outside of the top four. They will no doubt be wondering how it went wrong after starting brightly.

Logan Lightning - BYE

Logan had the opportunity to rest up in round 10 and will be facing the daunting prospect of taking on Peninsula Power in round 11.
