Deeanna Thompson netted a hat-trick as Souths United Women opened their 2016 season with a convincing 6-0 win over Sunshine Coast FC Women at Wakerley Park.

Thompson, who was last year’s Golden Boot winner, delivered the haul in her first competitive fixture for her new club after joining from last year’s Grand Finalists Palm Beach SC.

Her exploits were complemented by further goals to Georgia Keen, Kirsten McGilvray and Meaghan McElligott in a dominant display.

The win is Souths first against the Fire in PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Women’s and their first ever clean-sheet in the competition.

What They Said

“I tell you what, I was impressed by Sunshine Coast. Tom (White) has got those girls working very hard. We had to be disciplined and it was a long time before we broke them down. But even when we did they didn’t put their heads down, so I was impressed by that.” - Gary French, Souths United FC Women coach

“I think we made some terrible mistakes that cost us some goals but we knew Souths were going to be a good side. We have a very young side and so we’re going to have results like this.” – Tom White, Sunshine Coast FC Women coach
